Major Solo Exhibition by Yale Epstein Opens
Albert Shahinian Fine Art opens its summer program with a major solo exhibition of new paintings by celebrated artist Yale Epstein. Titled “Essential Forms”, the gallery presents over 80 new geometric abstract paintings and a number of photographs and serigraphs that relate the the development of the artist’s latest creative exploration. Epstein’s show opens with a free reception on Saturday, June 6, 5-8pm. An ArtistTalk with Yale is set for Sunday, June 28, 2-4pm. Both events are free to the public.
Epstein, home-based in Woodstock, NY, has been a creative powerhouse for over 60 years, establishing an international reputation as a master printmaker, painter, and collage-ist; and, more recently, with forays into photography and geometric abstraction. Essential Forms is a culminating expression of this most recent work – done over the last two years – in which Epstein searches for a pared down, clearer, more economical and precise visual language with which to express his aesthetic and artistic vision. While the work is a new approach for Epstein, he fully acknowledges its connection to both Modernist and Constructivist traditions – showing his respect for the craft of painting and the philosophical debt owed his historical precedents.
Most of the new paintings are small, same-sized compositions. The arrangements include only straight lines and a variety of simple shapes colored with a few hues and occasional textures. In aggregate, they shine with a dynamism that belies their ‘simple’ components. They invite the viewer to “experience the experiment”. Though the formal elements may seem foreign to those who know Epstein’s previous artistic output, there is an undeniable, subtle connection to that earlier body of work. To prove that point, a number of serigraphs are included in the exhibit – delicate screen prints done 50 years ago that will be shown for the first time and that point, prophetically, to this new body of work.
Concurrently, the gallery’s ‘back-room’ hosts its Annual Summer Salon, a diverse exhibit showcasing landscapes, works on paper, photographs and sculptures by over 35 artists represented by the gallery.
