Art Along the Hudson Kickoff Held on June 14, 2007

June 14th, 2007 marked the kickoff of the 4th Season of Art Along the Hudson - 4 Cities 4 Celebrations. Government officials, business and tourism leaders, media representatives, art organizations and artists came together to celebrate the vitality of this Mid-Hudson arts renaissance in the four river cities. The Arts Society of Kingston, located at 97 Broadway in Kingston, New York hosted the reception which featured a rollout of the initiatives, copies of the new brochure, and remarks by government officials and the four art organizations.

Benjamin Krevolin, President of the Dutchess County Arts Council, hosted the ceremony. The Arts Council is a major supporter of this initiative and Benjamin talked about the importance of the cultural economy to the overall business economy and the value to businesses in recruiting employees.

This was echoed by the Mayor of Kingston, James Sottile, who made sure he attended despite previous committments. He praised the Arts Society of Kingston, their accomplishments and the importance to the vitality of Kingston.

Nancy Cozean, Mayor of Poughkeepsie, also talked about the importance of art in Poughkeepsie and several new initiatives.

Lance Matteson, President of the Ulster County Development Corp, talked about the impact arts can make on the economy. As the newly appointed head of UCDC, Ulster County's lead economic development agency, his mission is to act as a catalyst for creating wealth, improving the quality of life and fostering economic opportunity for Ulster County located in New York's Hudson River Valley. Lance spoke with great passion about the criticalness of cultural economy to many facets of the overall economy.

Scott Talarczyk, (right) Community Relations coordinator from the Hudson Valley Credit Union, was recognized for the support HVFCU has given over the years. Scott cited many examples of cultural activities that he has enjoyed and promised to continue to support the efforts of the four cities.   Jim Hoekema (left) is part of the Newburgh Arts group.

Linda Hubbard, Chair of Art Along the Hudson, thanked the 4 cities art organizations and the many contributors to the Art Along the Hudson initiatives especially Carl Van Brunt for creating the brochure and posters and the printers Lithographs by Design for the outstanding job and contributions. The brochures, WAMC radio, and media advertising will reach hundreds of thousands arts consumers and cultural tourists in the greater Hudson Valley as well as parts of Massachusetts, New Jersey, Vermont, and Connecticut. In addition, Art Along the Hudson has a website, www.artalongthehudson.org, which helps visitors and residents learn more about special events and promotions at the city of their interest.

Each City’s art organization then talked about upcoming events and community based strong art initiatives. Anchored by the year-round Kingston First Saturdays and Beacon Second Saturdays, along with quarterly Weekend on Main events in Poughkeepsie and the outdoor River Arts Walk on the Last Saturday in Newburgh, the cultural activities include a year-round program featuring a variety of art forms from gallery and museum exhibits to music, dance, theatre and poetry. Each city has celebrations on Saturdays and weekends plus special events that range from sculpture exhibits, street fairs, parades, window exhibits and more.

Sara Pasti, President Beacon Arts Community Association, talked Beacon Second Saturday and annouced a new ferry schedule that will operate on weekends between Newburgh and Beacon.

Vindora Wixom, Executive Director Arts Society of Kingston, hosted the event in their recently renovated facility.  Many thanks to the Arts Society of Kingston for hosting this great evening of art.

Refreshments were donated by Ship to Shore of 15 West Strand Street, Kingston

and live music by four young Kingston musicians added to the festivities.
